LINCOLN ANNOUNCES THE CAPTURE OF PETERSBURG (CIVIL WAR.) Lincoln, Abraham; and Edwin M. Stanton. Pair of telegraph messages received in New York on the fall of Petersburg. Manuscripts in an unknown telegrapher's hand on the printed slips of the American Telegraph Company's New York office, each 4 x 7 1/2 inches; each mounted on a stub of scrapbook paper, small tears in Lincoln message affecting three letters, small ink burn in Stanton letter. Washington, 3 April 1865

Additional Details

By these telegrams, news reached New York that Petersburg had fallen, moving the Civil War into its final end game. Lincoln's telegram reads "This morning Lt Genl Grant reports Petersburg evacuated, & he is confident that Richmond also is. He is pushing forwa[rd] to cut off if possible the retreating Rebel army." Stanton's introductory telegram reads "The following telegh from the President announcing the evacuation of Petersburg & probably of Richmond has just been received by this dept." Both of these messages were received by Major General John Adams Dix, stationed in New York as commander of the Department of the East.
