". . . I was sitting in the reception room waiting to see the Secty. Greatly to my surprise Gen. Grant walked in. He said 'I heard you were here & came to thank you for carrying VA for me' . . . Shortly afterwards I recd a letter requesting me to come to Washington. I went & called at the White House. Grant again expressed his obligation to me & said he wanted to recognize it. I said to him 'I wd as soon hold office under you as under Gen. Washington . . . The Southern people accused me of supporting you to get office.' He replied that he understood me . . . "
