first edition. signed by confederate officers scott ship, john r. waddy and william gilham. Ship (1839-1917) commanded the Corps of VMI Cadets at New Market and served as Commandant of the school from 1862-89. Ship has signed both the title page and the front pastedown. Waddy (1834-1903) VMI class of 1853, served in the U.S. Army prior to the war and as a Lieutenant Colonel of Artillery in the CSA. His signature appears in the book on the front free endpaper. Gilham (1818-72) served in the Seminole War and the Mexican War and became a professor at VMI in 1846 where he taught infantry tactics. In 1860, he wrote a Manual of Instruction for the Volunteers and Militia of the United States -- which would become the standard manual for training Confederate troops. During the Civil War, he served as the Commandant of Camp Lee. Gilham has signed in pencil on the front free endpaper and with an inscription in his hand asking an unnamed major to provide a register of officers.
