A general's memoirs of the Civil War, Indian Wars, and Spanish-American War. The inscription reads "To Mr. Nathan Straus, most generous philanthropist, noblest of citizens and truest of friends, this volume is tendered with the best wishes of his friend Nelson A. Miles, Lieut. General, U.S. Army." The recipient was a co-owner of both Macy's and Abraham & Straus department stores; he had donated an ice plant to Cuba during the Spanish-America War.
