(CIVIL WAR.) Pope, John. Pair of war-date letters regarding rations for a soldier's home. Autograph Letters Signed "Jno. Pope" as a major general in the Union Army to Mrs. A.J. Aikens of the Soldiers Home in Milwaukee. 3 sheets, 8 x 5 inches, with the 2 sheets of the second letter pasted together into one sheet 13 1/4 inches long; minor foxing. With the stamped and postmarked envelope for the first letter. Milwaukee, WI, 16 and 29 December 1864

Additional Details

After his defeat at Second Bull Run, Major General John Pope (1822-1892) was transferred to command the Department of the Northwest. The first letter responds to a request for rations for the Soldiers' Home, and the second follows up: "I today received authority to issue rations to the Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee, in accordance with the practice established at other institutions of the kind & have accordingly so instructed the commissary of the station."
