(CIVIL WAR.) Pope, John. Pair of war-date letters regarding rations for a soldier's home. Autograph Letters Signed "Jno. Pope" as a major general in the Union Army to Mrs. A.J. Aikens of the Soldiers Home in Milwaukee. 3 sheets, 8 x 5 inches, with the 2 sheets of the second letter pasted together into one sheet 13 1/4 inches long; minor foxing. After his defeat at Second Bull Run, Major General John Pope (1822-1892) was transferred to command the Department of the Northwest. The first letter responds to a request for rations for the Soldiers' Home, and the second follows up: "I today received authority to issue rations to the Soldiers' Home in Milwaukee, in accordance with the practice established at other institutions of the kind & have accordingly so instructed the commissary of the station."
