Sherman (1820-91) Union officer, fought at first Bull Run and Shiloh, placed in command of the XV Corps fighting in the West and capturing Vicksburg, began his infamous March to the Sea in November 1864 which eventually led to the fall of Atlanta, after the war Sherman became General of the U. S. Army. In 1871, Rear Admiral James Alden took command of the Mediterranean Squadron and invited Sherman with him, who then toured Europe that year.<
