The letter to Dr. Weir Mitchell, declining an invitation; the postscript, a lengthy apology for not being able to attend the meeting of the Loyal Legion, joking that his numerous engagements will kill him and concerning his brother's health. The postscript: "I take it for granted that I would attend the meeting of the Loyal Legion at Phila. Apl 14 & 15. I will not be there. Long before I had ever been notified of such a meeting I had committed myself to Genl Slocum to attend a similar meeting in Brooklyn April 9, and made a dinner engagement here Apl 14, and several other right along enough to kill any ordinary man. My Doctor (Alexander) has cautioned me of the inevitable result . . ."
