"Lt. Col. [Henry L.] Potter has been detained unavoidably, first by illness & second by the destruction of his House by fire, leaving his family nothing besides what they stood in.
"By all means, Colonel, let me advise that you & Lt. Col. P. bury all past animosities and promote harmony in the Regiment. Let us avoid all quarrels, in this way we can best promote the interests of the service & the Cause. . . ."
Daniel Edgar Sickles (1819-1914) served as U.S. Representative from NY, and later became a Union general in the Civil War, losing a leg at the Battle of Gettysburg.
