"I am overjoyed with your speech. It is among the greatest of your life. The themes, the present peril, and your long silence invigorated all your pinions and up you soared to the highest reach of eloquence. It was time, renegades and sneaks had become too conspicuous and noisy. They must be lashed until they cower and hide away again. The Army rejoices over your speech. It has been very hard for us to keep a bold front to the enemy and get to feel that so many of those we left at home were becoming false to us and to the Cause. Armies need the inspiration of a loyal and hearty public opinion. Please offer my congratulations to Van Buren, when you see him. If you call me, with a little help we can now & then throw in from the Army. Can't keep New York right. Who can?
