"ARMIES NEED THE INSPIRATION OF A LOYAL AND HEARTY PUBLIC OPINION" (CIVIL WAR.) SICKLES, DANIEL E. Autograph Letter Signed, "Sickles," to attorney James T. Brady, praising his speech, stating that that renegades should be lashed, noting that the Army has been demoralized by the impression that many at home have abandoned the Cause, requesting that he convey congratulations to Van Buren, and stating that McClellan is thought to be aligned with the reactionaries. 2 pages, 4to, "Head Quarters Third Army Corps" stationery, ruled paper, with integral blank; short closed separations at folds, faint scattered staining. "Head Quarters," 9 March 1863
"I am overjoyed with your speech. It is among the greatest of your life. The themes, the present peril, and your long silence invigorated all your pinions and up you soared to the highest reach of eloquence. It was time, renegades and sneaks had become too conspicuous and noisy. They must be lashed until they cower and hide away again. The Army rejoices over your speech. It has been very hard for us to keep a bold front to the enemy and get to feel that so many of those we left at home were becoming false to us and to the Cause. Armies need the inspiration of a loyal and hearty public opinion. Please offer my congratulations to Van Buren, when you see him. If you call me, with a little help we can now & then throw in from the Army. Can't keep New York right. Who can? "Will not McClellan make just one trumpet-toned appeal to the Country and to his old comrades in the Army? He is now, unfortunately for his fame and future, associated too much in general estimation with the reaction. He is Van Buren's protégé for President & should follow his Champion. Else John must be looking out for a new Candidate! . . ." with--Carte-de-visite photograph, unsigned, portrait of him by Molleson. 4x2 1/2 inches. Nd.
