(CIVIL WAR.) WELLES, GIDEON. Two Partly-printed vellum Documents Signed, as Secretary of the Navy, U.S. Navy commissions. The first, appointing Henry S. Ross Second Assistant Engineer. The second, appointing H. Schuyler Ross Third Assistant Engineer. Each approximately 16 1/2x12 1/2 inches; a few very small holes at folds, usual wrinkles, minor staining or soiling on verso, seals intact. Washington, 11 April 1865; 18 November 1862

Additional Details

Before being appointed Secretary of the Navy where his efficiency contributed to the success of the North in defeating the Confederacy, Welles (1802-1878) helped organize the Republican party, leading Connecticut's delegation to the Chicago convention in 1860.
