Additional Details

John Moulder Wilson (1837-1919) earned a Medal of Honor for his work with the Topographical Engineers in 1862. After the war, he commanded West Point and then became Chief of Engineers. Here, a few months after the Union Army gained control of Vicksburg, MS, he writes: "I have the honor to submit the following plan for the distribution of troops for the new line of works for the defence of Vicksburg. The development of the interior crest of this line is about ten thousand yards, and will require a garrison of at least seven thousand five hundred men." He describes each part of the line in detail, with his suggested number of troops for each part. Provenance: Charles Hamilton sale, 1 February 1967, lot 25, to the consignor.
