(CIVIL WAR--1862.) Davis, Jefferson. Message of the President. 3 pages, 8vo, on one sheet; minor wear. [Richmond, 1862]

Additional Details

The text of Davis's 8 April 1862 message to the Confederate congress, in which he celebrates the recent victory at Shiloh and mourns the death of his leading general, Albert Sidney Johnston. Davis was reacting to a 6 April dispatch reflecting on the Confederate successes in the first day of battle, and he described the Union army as "signally routed . . . endeavoring to effect his retreat." He did not yet know about the Union counter-attack which had taken place the morning before his address; the battle is considered a Union victory. Crandall 620; Parrish & Willingham 913.
