Additional Details

While the Journal of Commerce had been an abolitionist newspaper, it became a notorious Copperhead organ during the war under new ownership, and was shut down twice by orders of President Lincoln. The 2 January 1863 issue prints the Emancipation Proclamation, and the related editorial declares it "a farce coming in after a long tragedy. . . . Most of the people regard it as a very foolish piece of business."
