(CIVIL WAR--1864.) Boudinot, Elias Cornelius. Receipt for $10,000 granted by the Confederate government for Cherokee refugees. Document Signed as delegate from the Cherokee Nation to the Confederate Congress, given to Sutton Selwyn Scott, the Confederate Commissioner of Indian Affairs. One page, 4 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches; later provenance note on verso. Paris, TX, 15 September 1864

Additional Details

A receipt for "the sum of ten thousand dollars, out of certain Indian funds, to be used for the benefit of the Cherokee indigent refugee citizens." Elias Cornelius Boudinot, the signer, was a Cherokee who served as an Arkansas delegate to the Confederate House of Representatives and as a lieutenant general in the Confederate army. A note in the verso explains that "Col. S.S. Scott left a tin cannister full of these papers to be burried for safe keeping when the Yankees were in this vicinity."
