Additional Details

The compiler, Charles C. Hodsdon (1840-1917) served as a private in the 10th Maine Infantry, and then in Louisiana as an adjutant in the 8th Regiment, Corps d'Afrique (which became the 80th United States Colored Infantry). Among the signers of this volume are General George L. Andrews as commander of the Corps d'Afrique; Colonels Cyrus Hamlin and Jonathan Appleton of the 8th and 9th Regiments, Corps d'Afrique; Brigadier General Franklin S. Nickerson; and Captain Levant W. Barnhart (Custer's adjutant). The large majority of the signers were either officers in various African-American regiments or in Maine regiments. Two autographs were added after 1865, both distinguished Maine politicians: former vice president Hannibal Hamlin in 1879, and congressman Amos L. Allen in 1910.
