(CIVIL WAR--ALBUM.) Autograph album containing the signatures of approximately 200 members of the House of Representatives from the 38th Congress, including James A. Garfield from Ohio, James G. Blaine from Maine, Ignatius Donnelly from Minnesota, Thaddeus Stevens from Pennsylvania and Speaker Schuyler Colfax from Indiana. Multiple signatures per page, but on one side only. Also includes a few clipped signatures of Civil War Generals, including Dix and Sykes, in the rear. 8vo, original red morocco gilt, a bit worn. Washington, [circa April-October] 1864

Additional Details

Includes the Representatives of newly-created West Virginia, but prior to Nevada being admitted. Lacks only a few signatures (and all the Territorial representatives) from being a complete collection--without, of course, the vacant seats by the seceded states. An early newspaper clipping mounted to the front free endpaper identifies the book as having been assembled by a Congressional page and then given to George E. Poyneer. Indicative of the times, Rep. James Rollins of Missouri has added above his signature, "Liberty, Union & Law."
