The 12th Massachusetts, after participating in the disastrous Battle of Fredericksburg and the Mud March, had arrived for the winter at Belle Plains on the south bank of the Potomac Creek, just a few miles east of Fredericksburg, as they prepared for the Chancellorsville campaign. This drawing was engraved and published in the 16 May 1863 issue of Harper's Weekly, with the caption "The Camp of the Twelfth Massachusetts Regiment, near Falmouth, Virginia, from a drawing by Mr. A.R. Waud." The camp was there described as "a model one in regard to beauty, order, cleanliness, and distribution."
