A cavalry skirmish in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northern Virginia, near what is now known as Bluemont. A Union soldier has grabbed a fleeing Confederate by his jacket and attempts to shoot him in the head with his revolver, while the Confederate raises his sword in defense. with--the complete issue of Harper's Weekly featuring the engraving of this sketch, 29 November 1862, explaining that this piece "illustrates one of those cavalry skirmishes which are so often reported in the papers. Both the rebels and ourselves constantly keep flying squadrons of cavalry scouring the country, and every now and then they meet, and then comes the tug of war."
