Additional Details

A late portrait of General Lee, taken less than two years before his death. He was in Washington on business, visited with President Grant on 1 May 1869, and was persuaded to sit for a Brady portrait at some point before his departure later that week. He appears with two favorite props--both the chair and the clock appear in numerous other Brady portraits. "The finest portrait of General Lee, and Brady's best effort"--Meredith, The Face of Robert E. Lee, page 77.
