Additional Details

William H. Grimball (1836-1864) was a lieutenant in the 1st South Carolina Light Artillery. Here he describes life defending Charlestown in a very small fort built on a sandbar: "The place is so small that the garrison are compelled to be provided for outside, so they tied to the fort one of our old gunboats . . . for quarters for the men. You may imagine there is not much exercise." He also described the fort's defective ordnance: "the big gun on which so much reliance was placed has burst at the first discharge. The Yankee prisoners say it was offered to the US Government and refused. . . . It was then sold to us."
