Additional Details

This newspaper was apparently the copy of subscriber Johnson Hagood (1829-1898), the Confederate brigadier general in command of Fort Wagner, SC at that time. In the Battle of Fort Wagner on 18 July, Hagood's men had repulsed an attack led by the famous 54th Massachusetts African-American regiment (as seen in the film Glory). Hagood famously refused to return Colonel Shaw's body, announcing scornfully "We buried him with his niggers." This issue was published 16 days after the battle, and features a long column summarizing the northern press coverage of the battle, headlined "The Assault on Morris Island--Disastrous Results--Terrible Fire of the Confederates--The Negroes, as Usual, Put Up Front." Hagood was likely quite pleased that the New York Tribune called the attack "a failure and a disaster."
