(CIVIL WAR--CONFEDERATE.) LEE, ROBERT E. Franking Signature, as Lieutenant and Assistant Chief Engineer, on the address leaf of a partly-printed letter signed in print by Chief Engineer Charles Gratiot, sending a cadet his scores from the Engineer Department's semi-annual examination at the Military Academy. Additional Details

Following his graduation from West Point in 1829 as a Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers, Lee served at Fort Pulaski and then at Fort Monroe. In 1834, he was appointed as the Assistant Chief Engineer in Washington, serving that station from 1834-37. An uncommon and unusual document from early in Lee's military career.
