Additional Details

After several weeks of cat-and-mouse in the mountains south of Chattanooga, the Union's Army of the Cumberland and the Confederate Army of Tennessee finally clashed in the Battle of Chickamauga from 18 to 20 September 1863. This map was apparently prepared by one of Polk's staff members soon after the battle, and depicts the two forces as they stood on the final day of the battle on 20 September. The Union forces have retreated to high ground above Chickamauga Creek, and the Confederates are poised to attack from the lower ground to the east. Lt. Gen. Polk leads the Confederate's right wing, while Lt. Gen. James Longstreet has just taken charge of the left wing that morning by order of Gen. Braxton Bragg. The locations of Polk's headquarters on Friday night [18 September] and Saturday night [19 September] are also noted. The caption reads "This is by no means an accurate map--either as to the position of troops or otherwise--but may aid a little in forming an idea of the Battle Ground." This worn but attractive map is a compelling artifact of one of the most important battles of the Civil War. with--a letter of authenticity from Polk's great-great-great-grandson testifying to its provenance.
