Additional Details

In the last days of the Confederacy, this company was down to 10 men on active duty, commanded by a lowly corporal. Its officers were all wounded or furloughed. The muster roll lists 32 men in total, with notes explaining the circumstances of the absent: "Wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, at home on furlough of disability"; "Wounded in battle May the 12th 1864, now a prisoner of war"; "Deserted to the enemy February 1865."
Six days later, the 48th Mississippi would participate in the desperate defense of Fort Whitworth at Petersburg, and then surrender at Appomattox ten days after that.
