Additional Details

Robert Selden Garnett (1819-1861) was a Virginian who attended West Point and served as a career Army officer until resigning his commission in April 1861 to join the Confederate Army. He served as Robert E. Lee's adjutant general for Virginia troops before being promoted to Brigadier General in June. He was killed on 13 July 1861 while retreating after the Battle of Rich Mountain, making him the first general killed on either side during the war. This letter informs a lieutenant of his appointment, and assigns him to the Virginia engineer corps.
