Describing the purchase of a pair of boots, the author complains: "You will doubtless be astonished at the price $15, but it is less than other houses are selling them. Some of our Christian Jews have the audacity to charge $12.00 for ladies' coarse pegged brogans. God only knows what our dear wives and daughters and sweet-hearts in the South are to do for shoes, if this iniquitous war lasts much longer."
