These orders were among the papers of Lieutenant Joel S. Kennard (1819-1901), commanding the CSS Sampson and then the CSS Isondiga in the defenses of Savannah. The longest, and the only one bearing a date, was issued from Savannah's Fort Jackson on 24 March 1862 by Major Edward C. Anderson. Titled "Night Signals for Outposts," it copies the pyrotechnic signals for pickets needing reinforcement, enemies threatening a landing, and more. Daytime signals involved flags.

An unsigned order is titled "Signals for Confederate Vessels Approaching Batteries along the Coast," involving a pattern of whistles.

A third order, possibly incomplete, is signed by Lieutenant J.N. Moffett, amending the printed naval signal guide for four signals, and requesting a nightly report of ammunition and powder on hand.
