Additional Details

Salem Academy was founded by Moravians in 1772 as a school for girls, and remains in operation today as the 4th oldest boarding school in America. This graduation event took place just 8 days after North Carolina was admitted to the Confederate States of America. The state had been divided on the issue of secession, with Salem and the rest of the western portion of the state leaning toward the Union. Dozens of students and their home states are named, most from North and South Carolina, with a handful from Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi; Miss J. Mock hailed from Indian Territory. One in OCLC (Virginia Historical Society). Parrish & Willingham 7864.
