Additional Details

Captain Elliot Newton Bush (1826-1864) and Lieutenant Henry Martyn Bush (1829-1889) of Belvidere, IL were brothers who served in the 95th Illinois Infantry. The most dramatic of these letters is Elliot's, written the day after the failure of the Red River Campaign in Louisiana: "The Red River ex. is over, the troops all out exc. those whose bones lie in the ground, the victims of the enemy & of disease. It has been a failure, a loss both in men & money & in Union sentiment. . . . [General Banks] was scared and driven out by an inferior force" (23 May 1864). Provenance: sold by Doris Harris Autographs to the consignor, June 1980.
