Additional Details

George Cosgrove (1841-1912) was a native of Ireland, enlisted from Vandalia, IL in the 7th Illinois Infantry as a private, and spent his final years as a Kentucky farmer. This ten-stanza recounting of Shiloh is his only known publication. "With furious numbers the foes dare assault us / And close press upon us on both flank and rear / Of victory they dreamed as in mass they moved on us / And seemed intent for to have it however so dear." No examples in OCLC or at auction, and possibly a unique survival.
