Additional Details

Ellen M. Sherman (1840-1914) lived in Marietta, Bushnell, and Canton, IL before marrying Conrad Welch "Will" Betts of Prairie City, IL in 1866. This collection of letters to Miss Sherman includes 4 from soldiers on active duty. A friend named Charles from the three-month 139th Illinois Infantry wrote twice in 1864. Her future husband Will wrote twice while serving in the 29th Illinois Infantry in 1861 and 1862. Most of the collection consists of letters between her and Will after the period of his service, 1862-66 (27 from Will, and 24 from Ellen). 12 other letters to Ellen round out the collection. Many of these other letters discuss the war from the home front.
