Additional Details

Egbert Patterson of Ontario in Lagrange County, IN joined the 12th Indiana Cavalry (also known as the 127th Indiana Regiment) in December 1863. Like many cavalrymen, Private Patterson's experience involved more small skirmishes than pitched battles. Scouting for rebels in the mountains near Green River, TN, "we seen fifteen, they fired on us but did not hit any of us. We fired twenty shots from our revolvers and did kill three of them. The bullets came close to my head" (14 May 1864). In Murfreeboro, TN "I went two days and two nights without a mouthfull to eat" and then "the Rebs got us surrounded but we whiped them at last" (24 December 1864).
