Charles Stuart Sweetser (1837-1920) a farmer from North Yarmouth, ME, served in the nine-month 25th Maine Infantry. These rather long and articulate letters describe garrison duty near the capital; at one point Sweetser proclaims that "southern villages are very small and exceedingly dirty places."
