(CIVIL WAR--MAP.) Gensel, Ira Fox; artist. Plan of Fort Ellsworth just south of Washington. Manuscript in red and black ink on paper, 9 3/4 x 15 1/2 inches; folds, heavily inked cannons causing slight offsetting and loss from ink burns. Alexandria, VA, 24 June 1861

Additional Details

Fort Ellsworth overlooked the Potomac River and the city of Alexandria. It was built in the first months of the war as part of the defenses of Washington. This plan shows the fort's artillery pieces (6-pounders, rifle cannons, siege guns, and Columbiads), the nearby Alexandria Basin reservoir, and nearby camps of 8 regiments including the Ellsworth Zouaves. Downtown Alexandria is represented by a small square, dwarfed by the fort (and presumably out of scale). The artist was a lieutenant in the 4th United States Infantry, a resident of Doylestown, PA. He died late the next year from wounds suffered at Petersburg.
