(CIVIL WAR--MAP.) Wells, John G. Panorama of the Seat of War. Engraved map, 15 x 9 3/4 inches, on verso of a colored "Union Forever" lettersheet bearing a 27 January 1862 letter from Albert M. Wheeler to his friend James; a bit of ink spotting, offsetting, minor wear. [New York, 1861]

Additional Details

Several Civil War maps were issued with this title, but this one is rarely seen. It shows the principal towns of eastern Maryland and Virginia, along with rail lines, forts, and the Battle of Bull Run. Flanking the caption are portraits of Generals Scott and McClellan. One copy in WorldCat.
The letter on the other side might be equally interesting, if your taste tends toward the raunchy. Albert M. Wheeler was a private from Bangor in the 7th Maine Infantry, stationed at Camp Griffin in Virginia. He assures his hometown buddy that his regiment would "make an advance soon on Centervill and drive the damd Rebels." From there, the talk is mostly about girls, and strewn liberally with cuss words. Private Wheeler died in a Virginia hospital three months later.
