They smashed up the cars by bricks, paving stones, &c. We stood it as long as we could when we fired on them. . . . They murdered our regimental band, 6 in number, who unfortunately was left behind." James Baxter Smith. Autograph Letter Signed as private in Company G (Worcester Light Infantry), to wife, on patriotic letterhead. "The 7th regiment from New York arrived here today. There was a great rejoicing at their arrival. . . . The northern troops will be joining in thousands now that the road is open. . . . If an attack had been made before, we should have had some fear of the results, but the results of today make us feel assured that the south cannot send sufficient force to take the Capitol.
