The 44th Massachusetts was a nine-month regiment. They staged this opera in North Carolina in March 1863 toward the end of their term, selling copies of the libretto to benefit the regiment's charity fund. They also staged an encore performance upon their return to Boston in August. See Haines, In the Country of the Enemy, page 140.
