Additional Details

George B. Whitney (1844-1895) of Natick, MA was a private in the 13th Massachusetts Infantry. "We have had a very severe battle, many of our brave comrades fell dead and wounded, and among them was our friend and one of your old scholars, Daniel E. Reed. . . . When Daniel was shot, he was taken to the rear, where they stopped to rest him. . . . Daniel said 'I am not afraid to meet my God." Whitney took possession of Reed's effects, which he plans to send home to Reed's mother--but he asks his old instructor to break the news to her first. He also lists the other Natick boys who were killed or wounded at the battle.
