Additional Details

First American edition of a British work, intended for Union surgeons; first issue, with title dated 1862. Longmore's manual first appeared in Volume 2 of Holmes and Hulke's System of Surgery (London, 1861). A condensed version was incorporated in the 1863 Manual of Military Surgeons published in Richmond for Confederate use. The original owner of this copy may have been Dr. William Ingalls (1813-1903), surgeon of the 5th and 59th Massachusetts Infantry regiments. Rutkow I, GS56.1 note. One example of this first issue in OCLC, at Western University; none traced at auction since a Swann sale, 19 September 1957, lot 158 (though Swann also sold a second issue in 2018).
