Meagher was a prominent Irish Nationalist who had escaped from Tasmania and settled in New York. He was then serving as captain in the predominantly Irish 69th New York; he later served as Brigadier General and commander of the famed Irish Brigade. This patriotic tune was by John Mahon, an Irish-American journalist and good friend of Stephen Foster. See Emerson, "Doo-dah!: Stephen Foster and the Rise of American Popular Culture," page 270.
