Additional Details

James Edward Jouett (1826-1902) was a Union naval commander known as "Fighting Jim." In July 1863, his ship the USS R.R. Cuyler captured a steamer running the blockade: "I sailed from off Mobile July 9th and off the Tortugas I chased & captured the Rebel str Kate Dale from Mobile." Jouett was promised by the prize commissioners that he was to get a 3/20 share of the sale proceeds, but 1/20 was later given to Admiral Farragut although Jouett was out of Farragut's jurisdiction at the time. Here he writes to Francis H. Upton, a private admiralty lawyer specializing in prize cases, to see if his complaint had any merit. An interesting piece of naval and legal history.
