Additional Details

The USS Tuscumbia was an ironclad gunboat which saw duty on the Mississippi River from March 1863 to February 1865. It played a key role at Vicksburg, notably carrying Admiral Porter and Generals Grant and Sherman on a reconnaissance mission which drew heavy fire. Oddly enough, we can find no record of the Captain Thomas McFarrell mentioned on verso as its commander. The artist is unknown.
