Additional Details

An apparently unpublished memoir by Corporal Herman J. Eaton (1839-1914) of the 11th New Hampshire Infantry. The memoir is 168 pages long and apparently based closely upon a wartime diary. It begins during the Battle of Spotsylvania on 18 May 1864 (following an earlier volume, now lost), and continues through the end of the war. Eaton describes the gruesome battlefield at Cold Harbor at length (pages 90-94), as well as the Second Battle of Petersburg (pages 132-145), where he was wounded while carrying the colors and lay in the mud until midnight waiting for the shooting to stop. The memoir is followed by 57 pages of poems by Eaton and others, many on patriotic themes and dated 1865-67. Provenance: American Book Auctions sale #381, lot 14, to the consignor.
