Additional Details

The 128th New York was mustered in September 1862, and was engaged in sleepy garrison duty until called out to defend Gettysburg, PA against a cavalry attack by J.E.B. Stuart later that year. Stuart fled upon the regiment's arrival--the real Battle of Gettysburg would take place the following July. This ten-verse ballad by a private in Company E recounts the regiment's modest exploits: "In Gettysburg we lay that day / All anxious for a brush / But the Rebels did not seem inclined / To gratify our wish." The regiment later found their fair share of combat in Louisiana and the Shenandoah Valley. This broadside has not been traced on OCLC and may be unique.
