Additional Details

The Union forces took Natchitoches on 1 April, and immediately began publishing a daily newspaper despite the lack of newsprint. This wallpaper copy prints their endorsement of the Lincoln-Johnson ticket, illustrated by a flag. It prints an important order from General William B. Franklin, declaring that Union soldiers captured while looting will not be exchanged. The editors also felt it necessary to deny a rumor which had been circulated by Confederates, and explained patiently to the townsfolk that the Yankees did not field a regiment of Cyclops from the Amazon.
