BROADSIDE EXTRA ON FALL OF RICHMOND (CIVIL WAR--NEWSPAPERS.) Latest! The Final Blow. Richmond Taken. Letterpress broadside, 11 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches; folds, moderate foxing. [Brooklyn, NY?], 3 April 1865

Additional Details

This newspaper broadside extra was based on a telegraph sent to New York, "special to the Daily Eagle": "11:30 a.m., a dispatch from E.M. Stanton announces the capture of Richmond by our troops under Gen. Weitzel, they having taken it about 8:15 this morning." It was presumably issued by the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, which boasted of the largest daily circulation of any evening paper in the country. An extra for this dramatic news would seem to be well justified, as the paper's first full edition did not hit the presses until 2:00 that afternoon. None others traced at auction or on OCLC.
