An extraordinary collection with almost no duplication. Contains complete sets and covers all the major and minor themes found on Civil War patriotic covers: coats of arms, zouaves, soldiers, generals, politicians, flags, contraband, city views, second Presidential campaign of Lincoln, Lincoln memorial issues, etc. Would provide a good source for study of the various issues of covers which have the same vignettes but with varying text . Collection contains a large number of rarely seen issues as well as 60 Confederate covers.

Sets include: State arms in both color and black-and-white published by Magee - each with 35 covers; state arms published by Upham and complete in 35 covers; The Loyal States and The Rebel States in various colors with 23 and 11 covers respectively; the Loyal States published by Murphy of Fulton Street - all 5 issued before an injunction stopped production because of copyright infringement.
