William Wallace Burns (1825-1892) was a West Point graduate and was promoted to brigadier general in September 1861. He then commanded the famous Philadelphia Brigade through November 1862, including the Peninsular Campaign.

This portrait probably predates the severe wound Burns suffered to his face in June 1862. While a bust detail from this portrait appears on his Wikipedia page, we have traced no other examples of this nearly full-length image in any size.
