Additional Details

This playbill begins with a patriotic quotation, and describes the festivities planned for Washington's Birthday, including a performance of "Geary's Grand March," a dramatic reading of Poe's Raven, the plays "Don Caesar de Bazan" and "Turning the Tables," and a minstrel performance titled "Ethiopian Melange."

The regiment was commanded by John White Geary, who had served as the first mayor of San Francisco and as governor of Kansas; he was later governor of Pennsylvania. The regiment served in most of the major battles of the eastern theater, playing a key role at Antietam. One other example in OCLC, at the Library Company of Philadelphia; none others traced at auction since 1896.
