(CIVIL WAR--PENNSYLVANIA.) Statement concerning the alleged cowardice of Lt. Col. Charles Parham, illustrated with a map. Manuscript, 3 pages (12 1/2 x 8 inches) on one folding sheet; minor wear. Np, circa July 1862

Additional Details

At the Battle of Front Royal in far northern Virginia, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Parham of the 29th Pennsylvania Infantry found himself far away from the fighting. His official statement (published in the War of Rebellion XXIV, page 560) tells a complicated story of his heroic actions in evading capture. We here offer a conflicting statement from a Mr. Miller of Front Royal, alleging that Parham was found in the town of Winchester far from the front, "rejoicing in his escape from the enemy with a whole skin, having no evidence of injury," having lost his horse "through his own carelessness." The manuscript map on the final page shows the location of the battle, of the 29th Pennsylvania, and of the road to Winchester.
